🥟 Chao-Down #87 Mr. ChatGPT goes to Congress, Anthropic partners with Zoom on AI chatbots, Google Cloud launches AI tools for drug discovery

Yesterday, Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI and the creator of ChatGPT, testified before a Senate Judiciary subcommittee on privacy, technology and the law on the regulation and impact of AI.

He urged lawmakers to regulate AI, saying it was a potential “printing press moment” but also posed significant risks to society, such as misinformation, manipulation, bias and job displacement.

One suggestion he floated was to create a licensing regime for companies working on the most powerful AI models and testing them for safety and ethics before releasing them to the public.

Altman also said that AI could benefit humanity in many ways, such as improving health care, education, entertainment and productivity, and that the US should invest in AI research and education to maintain its global leadership.

The question in my mind is that it’s not about whether AI should be regulated, but how? We’ll have to see what Congress does next.
