🥟 Chao-Down #38 The energy cost of AI, Meta's LLaMA model leaks, Stephen Spielberg "terrified" about AI creating art

Plus, AI recreates what people see from looking at their brain scans.

Who let the LLaMAs out?

Meta’s most recent large language model LLaMA got leaked by 4Chan users and is currently being distributed across peer-to-peer torrent networks.

Originally, Meta only allowed academic researchers to apply to get access to the model. But now anybody can download the model weights and run the code themselves.

The consequences of open-source large language models are still yet to be fully seen. Bad actors or rogue nation states, if motivated enough, can certainly take these models and create their own versions of ChatGPT with ill-intent. We’ll have to see.
