Can China catch up to ChatGPT?

Chinese tech giants such as Baidu, Alibaba, and NetEase have announced that their own versions of the popular AI chatbot will be coming to their platforms in the coming weeks.

However, experts say that replicating the technology will be a tough challenge.

Right now, Chinese firms struggle to obtain the most advanced AI hardware necessary to train these AI models because of the U.S. export ban on advanced semiconductors. Not only that, but there is a lack of high-quality Chinese text available on the internet which makes data a hurdle for development.

Notwithstanding the technical challenges, the biggest barrier to release may be Beijing itself. Chinese regulators have warned Chinese tech giants not to offer the public ChatGPT-like services over concern of the chatbot’s ability to produce uncensored replies to the user.
