Plus, Google makes a $300m investment in Anthropic, an OpenAI competitor

Happy Monday! In what will likely be one of many more alliances to come in AI, we saw Google make a sizable investment in Anthropic, the upstart competing with OpenAI. Part of the deal requires that the money invested be spent on compute using Google Cloud infrastructure.

Interestingly enough, Google already made a splashy acquisition with Deepmind in 2014 and has its own Google Brain research division. Is the investment in Anthropic a recognition that Google’s own AI capabilities are lacking? Or really just a land-grab to keep the technology out of the hands of others?

We’ll have to see.
