Plus, a new bill from senators does not grant Section 230 immunity to AI, holding companies liable for harm caused by GenAI.
Regulators are still trying to figure out how to best protect consumers from AI.
Senators Josh Hawley and Richard Blumenthal have introduced a new bill, named the "No Section 230 Immunity for AI Act," which aims to clarify that generative AI is not covered by Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act which provides legal immunity to platforms for third-party content.
The proposed bill would allow individuals to sue companies over harm caused by generative AI models. Advocates of the bill, such as Senators Hawley and Blumenthal, argue that AI companies should be held accountable for the consequences of their products.
However, opponents suggest that denying AI developers Section 230 protection could lead to crippling lawsuits or hinder the effectiveness and usability of AI products.
It remains to be seen how the tech industry will respond to this proposed legislation and the potential implications it may have on the development and use of generative AI technology.
