Is AI poised to transform the Olympics?
Just a few months before the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced its going to start using AI all across its operations. From finding and screening athletes, to helping competitors build custom training routines, to improving the viewing experiences for people at home, the IOC has big ambitions to make this year’s Olympics the best ever.
One area that AI is posed to (hopefully) add meaningful value is in providing unbiased feedback especially for judges to provide more accurate scores. For instance, in the world of competitive diving, computer vision can help track the exact number of flips an athlete performs and the exact maximum height he or she achieved.
In the areas of practice, robotics is poised to help athletes get better, like how a robot trained in the style of two-time gold medalist Xu Xin, allowed him to compete against himself in practice matches.
The initiatives aren’t without controversy as locals express concerns about the increasing number of AI-powered cameras that’ll be interspersed throughout the city to detect security threats.
Will the show be worth it?
