Plus, OpenAI heads to Hollywood to pitch studios on its latest Sora tech.

More legislation is being written into law amidst the fast-moving AI wave. And this time it’s happening in the music industry.

Tennessee has taken a pioneering step to protect artists by passing the ELVIS Act. Short for “Ensuring Likeness Voice and Image Security”, the ELVIS Act bans commercial use of AI-generated imitations of "songwriters, performers, and music industry professionals' voices from the misuse of artificial intelligence."

Tennessee law already covered photo, name, and likeness rights, but new AI capabilities like voice-cloning and deepfakes required additional protections.

According to the bill, victims can now sue if someone “distributes, transmits, or otherwise makes available an algorithm, software, tool, or other technology, service, or device.” What it does exempt is news, broadcasts, commentary, satire, and parody as well as content protected under the First Amendment.

The state is already the home for some of the biggest names in music and it’s looking to maintain its leadership by setting a “first of its kind” precedent for the protection of artistic integrity.

Will we see more laws come to effect as we seek to stay ahead of where AI is going?
