Is compute the next precious resource that companies and countries will fight over?
I just finished listening to Sam Altman’s interview on the Lex Fridman podcast and among many of the points mentioned, Sam in particular was adamant that compute resources reflected in OpenAI’s (and many other companies’) insatiable demand for GPUs would effectively become the new oil.
It explains why the OpenAI CEO was in the headlines not long ago for the incredible claim that he was raising $7 trillion for a new advanced AI chip company (which Sam disputed in his talk with Lex). Whatever that number ends up being, Sam has clear ambitions that will require more and more compute.
The full interview is worth listening to, especially if you want to hear Sam’s first-hand account of the events leading to his ousting and return as CEO of OpenAI.
