What does it mean for an AI to be curious?

Researchers from OpenAI, UC Berkeley, and the University of Edinburgh sought to find out.

A recent project explored how to give AI a sense of curiosity, so it can learn without any human guidance. The researchers used a simple definition of curiosity: the AI would try to predict what would happen next in its environment and get rewarded by how wrong it was.

The team tested this idea on more than 50 video games and found that the AI could explore and even beat some of them. However, they also found that curiosity could have a downside: the AI could get distracted by random or irrelevant things, such as a TV or a Game Over screen. The researchers hope that this work could help improve how algorithms understand and interact with the world.
