Once the darling of open-source AI, it looks like the company behind the image generation Stable Diffusion model isn’t looking too stable.

Stability AI is facing pressure from their investors like Coatue to explore a sale of the company as well as for its controversial CEO, Emad Mostaque, to resign. Despite huge popularity among its various foundation models, the company has found it difficult to make money — burning $8 million a month and earning just a fraction of that back in revenue.

In addition, Forbes recently ran an alarming feature on Emad detailing how he’s had a history of exaggerations even before his time in his current role. This plus a string of executive departures has caused a leadership vacuum at the company.

If Stability AI does go for a sale, what does that say about the future of companies building open-source AI models?
