OpenAI wants to address “catastrophic risks” associated with AI.

In their latest blogpost, OpenAI revealed the formation of a preparedness team tasked with tracking, evaluating, forecasting, and protecting against a range of major AI-related issues including: nuclear threats, chemical, biological, radiological threats, autonomous AI replication, human deception by AI, and cybersecurity attacks.

OpenAI acknowledges the transformative potential of advanced AI models for the benefit of humanity but underscores the growing risks they represent.

The preparedness team will be led by Aleksander Madry, originally from MIT's Center for Deployable Machine Learning, and will also establish a "risk-informed development policy" to guide the company's AI model evaluation and monitoring efforts.

OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, has previously emphasized the need to prioritize AI risk mitigation on a global scale, drawing parallels between AI and nuclear weapons.

What will come out of the Preparedness Team? We’ll have to see to find out.
