Plus, SEC Chairman warns of "unavoidable" financial crisis if AI is not regulated

Could AI spell an “unavoidable” financial crisis? The chairman of the SEC Gary Gensler warns that it’s a real possibility if not regulated properly.

Gensler told the Financial Times that he was worried about a possible crisis in the late 2020s or early 2030s, caused by the concentration of AI models and cloud service providers. Fearing that institutions will depend too much on the same AI models, Genseler believes we could see herd behavior in financial markets, where advisors will recommend the same investments because an AI told them so.

The SEC recently suggested a new rule to limit the use of AI by broker-dealers and investment advisers, but the rule has met resistance from Republican lawmakers and industry groups.

The trend seems to be more AI not less showing up in financial markets. The question is, what will be the consequences?
