Plus, ex-Apple's John Ive and OpenAI's Sam Altman may raise $1 billion from Softbank to build a new AI device venture.

After 5 long months of binging re-runs of Suits, we’ll finally get a refresh on new shows and movies.

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has reached a deal with Hollywood studios to end the writers’ strike. Central to the new contracts were restrictions around the use of AI in TV and film scriptwriting.

Based off the contract, the WGA negotiated:

  • AI cannot write or rewrite literary material.

  • AI-generated content cannot be considered as source material, meaning that AI-created material cannot be used to "undermine a writer's credit or separated rights."

  • Writers can still use AI in their writing services as long as they have studio consent and comply with company policies.

  • A company can't require a writer to use AI software and must inform writers if any materials given contain or are created by AI.

  • A provision which gives the WGA the authority to challenge the use of writers' work in training AI software.

It’s the first-ever deal of its kind that’s meant to protect the creatives working in TV and film from the threat of AI and automation. The question is, will it be enough?
